CUSTODIAN= freshness at its best

December 17, 2009

peen scene pop a lockWhoo- Hoo! CUSTODIAN got some niiiiiice love from Austin’s premier dance party blog the Peen Scene. The great thing about this site is not only do they keep the town up to date on all things nightlife related, they also take a mean picture wherever they go. I heard they are in the running for an Oscar this year. Just saying…

Check out what they have to say about Pop-A-Lock:

“When I jam this new track, “Pop-A-Lock”, by Artifact Workshop artist CUSTODIAN(caps lock is a must), I don’t know whether to wil’ out or double check my car doors. Just download it and see wtf I mean. CUSTODIAN is the new project of former Single Frame member Adreon Henry and partner in crime Jen Bradley…. Anyway, the download of this mp3 is a must, shit is dance punk freshness at its best.”

ffff bsotm

CarStereoWars4More from the “admittedly old news department,” but this is too good to pass up. One of the coolest blogs coming out of Austin or anywhere for that matter is Both Sides of the Mouth. The great thing about BSOTM is the extra touch they ALWAYS take in their photographs. Everything is drawn on to some degree and then scanned into a computer. Sometimes it is simple and others it is intricate.   You will never see a regular .jpg that in all likely hood also appears on 30 other websites. Taking that extra touch makes the site a special place that manages to create a tactile realness that otherwise is hard to come by on this world wide web of ours. BSOTM dug the DJ Car Stereo Wars and Neiliyo set over Fun Fun Fun Fest and were kind enough to write down their thoughts and post a few pictures! Check the whole thing out HERE.

“Car Stereo (Wars)’ set definitely kept things going and even made sure to kick it up a few more notches while they were at it. Who knew you could throw such good dance parties with a Macbook? Chris Rose definitely does, and he took this to his favor when he ushered and mixed one hell of a dance party at Fun Fun Fun. With another local Austinite, Neiliyo, at his side to MC the proceedings, the blue stage turned into a veritable mudfest with not a single person ever caught in a moment of stagnance. Everyone was moving as the beats were flowing from the speakers without break. Never a moment of silence to be had, it was a nonstop dance party from start to finish and Neiliyo took to the crowd to assure everyone kept dancing. Rose from behind the crowd that had now formed on stage to stretch the dance party even further, would occasionally join the banter of Neiliyo to make sure he was providing us with just what we needed to keep our joints greased. No matter where you looked everyone was dancing, and the people responsible for all of this were lost in the crowd making sure to keep everything going – Rose hidden amidst the crowd on the stage; Neiliyo partying incognito with the crowd in the mud pit below. With the rain still coming down, it was wet and dirty – those responsible for the tunage being mixed by Rose woulda been proud.“

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT BOTH SIDES OF THE MOUTH!

austin sound collaboration recap

December 11, 2009

So, this I admittedly old news, but we wanted to share some great press from Fun Fun Fun Fest regarding the DJ Car Stereo (Wars) set with Neiliyo acting as MC. Austin Sound had some nice things to say:

“Oh Chris Rose, how we’ve missed you down here in Austin since you decided to take off for the NYC. Our little burg just hasn’t rocked the dancefloors quite as hard after you left. So needless to say, having Car Stereo (Wars) mixup maelstrom sweep back into town was a welcome event, and his samples, as always, were heavy on the familiar hits expertly spun to send the crowd into maximum frenzy. The stage was packed with familiar Car Stereo (Wars) fans, though nothing quite as crazy as last year’s costumed turned. Rose was aided, however, by local MC Neiliyo, reppin’ it preppy on the mic despite the rain picking up harder and harder throughout the set. Till next time CS(W)!”

Thanks for the “shout out” Austin Sound! Click HERE for Austin Sound’s pictures from the fest!

sweater partyKind words about BOTH DJ Car Stereo (Wars) AND Neiliyo today from the fine journalists at Austinist.com:

“Mash-up maestro Chris Rose, better known as DJ Car Stereo (Wars)*, has established himself as one of the Austin’s most popular disc jockeys over the course of the last few years, and lately, he’s been making some noise nationally as well. We’ve known him to regularly furnish the soundtrack to many a shindig around town, but earlier this year, he started spinning in Brooklyn periodically, and in August, he turned in a manic set at Lollapalooza ‘09. During that Chicago performance, Rose invited fellow Austinite Neil Petty (a.k.a. Neiliyo) on stage, leading to much pandemonium and one heck of a day time dance party. The two have forged a firm friendship ever since, and this Thursday, they combine forces yet again to present a Christmas Sweater Party at Emo’s.

Up-and-comer Beef Eigler (Hot Britches) kicks things off with pulsating beats galore, Neiliyo delivers funky electro-pop in typically robust fashion next, and Rose’s exhilarating mixes round off the scheduled entertainment for the evening. Rose is currently working on a follow-up to 2007’s
The Bandit, which could see the light of day by March 2010. A contribution or two from Neiliyo is expected on that upcoming DJ CS(W) release, and Petty seems to be keeping pretty busy, informing us that, “The new LP is almost done, my EP with Artifact Workshop is awaiting its final touches, and I’m about to punch out my next Mixtape, the sequel to Copywriting 101.” As for this evening’s extravaganza, Neiliyo adds, “The Christmas Sweater Party is going to be all about people coming together for a niche fashion that HAS to be exposed. No runways, no drama, just reindeer and bells, baby!” To provider further inspiration, Rose has put together this montage and a “Christmas Sweater Song” to encourage attendees to flaunt that maligned beloved garment. Enter your information in the form below for a chance to win two free tickets to the festivities.

* As of December 7th, Rose has changed his moniker from Car Stereo (Wars) to DJ Car Stereo (Wars) due to a legal dispute with an Aussie band.”

car stereo wars fun fun fun 2009 peenThere was a nice interview with Chris/ DJ Car Stereo (Wars) on last week’s Austin American Statesman Blog that you can read HERE!

The Fun Fun Fun Fest set went great thanks in part to the help of Neiliyo who resumed his duties as DJ CS(W) MC after honing the craft in Chicago at Lollapolloza.  The Peen Scene was there to document the muddy and sweaty fans getting down.   Check out this picture and many more HERE!

There are still copies of the debut DJCS(W) album the Bandit complete with a one of a kind mustache on the cover available for purchase HERE.  Impress your friends.

Festival Crashers has nothing but nice things to say about Neiliyo:

“Seeing Neiliyo in Austin these days is like being in Pittsburgh in 2002 seeing Girl Talk. He’s way ahead of his time, has an unmatched energy and is doing it harder and better than anyone in his genre. If there really is anyone in his genre.”

Read the whole thing HERE.

Also- check out this video of how to dress up as Neiliyo for Halloween. Take the Chewbacca costume back to the store, it’s time to break out the candy paint boat shoes!

neiliyo in the daily texan

October 21, 2009

A few weeks back, The Daily Texan- The University of Texas student run newspaper (and close personal freinds of Walter Cronkite)- caught up with Artifact Workshop artist Neiliyo.

Sample hard hitting question/answer:

DT: If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would it be?

NP: Lil Wayne — I’d be all over the radio.

Read the whole interview HERE.

Look out for the AW Neiliyo release when you least expect it early 2010.  Act like you know.

the laughing 1 of 10 to watch in 2009!

December 17, 2008

EarFarm.com advised their readers to keep an eye on the Laughing in 2009.  Last year they said the same thing about The Ting Tings, Duffy, and Dead Confederate and look at em now.  Thanks to EarFarm for endorsing the Laughing as the jam of 2009!
Check it out:

“Austin’s The Laughing captures the smiling mope of The Cure and mixes it with heavy doses of primal thunder and late-career Talking Heads jungle love. It’s equally sexy and weird, catchy and danceable. If David Cronenberg’s The Fly were a band, it’d be The Laughing. Decide for yourself if that sounds like something you’d like. Me? I decided long ago.”
Congrats boys- we are proud of you! (photo cred)
